Overview
Earn a career as a Civil Engineering Technologist with this 2-year program. As a civil Engineering Technologist, you will be involved in planning, design and construction of roads, bridges, subdivisions, buildings, municipal services, and heavy infrastructure.
Civil Engineering Technologists work in a variety of environments including construction, forestry, mining, oil and gas, and transportation. They are an essential member of the engineering team who split their time between office and field work, and, when on-site, may work in urban, rural, and remote settings.
Careers
Upon completion of the Civil Engineering Technology program, you will be qualified for careers in government departments, consulting firms and construction companies in the following positions:
- Designers
- Estimators
- Testers
- Surveyors
- Inspectors
- Supervisors
- technical writers
- project managers
In northern BC, there is high demand from industry for Civil Engineering Technologists. Additionally, graduates may continue their education and complete a bridging program that leads to a university degree in engineering.
What You Will Learn
In the 2-year Civil Engineering Technology diploma program, students will learn relevant theoretical and practical knowledge to support their work within the broad field of Civil Engineering. Courses will be delivered with components of face-to-face classroom instruction, computer-aided design and modelling, field surveying, and experimental laboratory testing. Students will develop an understanding of the engineering principles used to perform structural, hydraulic, municipal, transportation, and construction materials design. Effective technical communication and project management skills will be emphasized throughout the program. Students can expect to spend an average of 31 hours per week in class and labs, with additional time spent studying, completing assignments, and doing research. CNC’s Civil Engineering Technology program explores the effects of northern, rural, and remote environments on Civil Engineering projects, with consideration of Indigenous perspectives.

Need help meeting these requirements? Check out our Academic Upgrading options.
*Note: It is highly recommended that required admissions courses be completed within the past five years. If more than five years has elapsed, upgrading the required subjects is suggested. This is due to the heavy emphasis on math and physics in the PornÑо¿ËùCivil Engineering Technology Program curriculum.
ESL Requirements
Candidates whose first language is not English must meet the English requirements and provide proof of English language proficiency through one of the following:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) score of 80 with no section below 19, within the last two years; or
- International English Language Testing System- Academic (IELTS Academic) score of 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, taken within the last two years; or
- Successful completion of six credits of post-secondary first-year English studies (minimum “C” grade) at a recognized college or university in an English-speaking county within the last two years.
Bring Your Own Device
Civil Engineering Technology at PornÑо¿Ëùis a bring your own device (BYOD) program. The course content contains a substantial amount of computer-aided design (CAD), which will be performed both in-class and at home. Your device will be used to access a virtual desktop, where you will find the CNC-provided software for your course.
This is a new initiative at PornÑо¿Ëùand to help ensure a successful experience, we recommend the following minimum device requirements:
Minimum requirements
- Operating System: Windows 7, 8.1, 10 or macOS 10.12 to 10.14
- 2 GB memory
- 14” screen or larger recommended
- Minimum resolution of 1280x1024
- Wireless standard 802.11n or Wireless 802.11ac (a wired connection is also recommended if available, but not necessary)
- Integrated keyboard
- Current Chrome/Safari/Firefox installed web browser
- Power cord for recharging
- Recommended: 2-hour or greater battery life (some classrooms have limited access to power receptacles)
The device requirements listed above are the minimum to effectively run networked versions of the technical software (for example, AutoCAD). If a standalone version of any software is desired, then a device that exceeds the minimum requirement may be needed.
Limited admission
A program with a limited number of seats per intake and is on a “first qualified, first admitted” basis.
Selection Process
If there is room in the program, you will be accepted once you have met all the admission requirements. This is called “first qualified, first accepted.” If you qualify after the program is full, you will be put on a wait list.
